This post contains spoilers for the recently completed mystery knitalong!
The final clue of Only Yarn in the Building has been revealed for a few weeks now, and it was quite a ride, wasn’t it? Cityscapes emerging from short rows, slip stitches, cables, and lace.
I loved designing each and every stitch of it, and while it’s not been a secret, the entire shawl has been a love letter to not only the show but to New York City itself:
On top of the cityscapes are the now-infamous Glitterbomb stitches that were inspired by the Chrysler Building—one of the most beautiful Art Deco style skyscrapers in the city.
Below the cityscapes are Oliver’s Dip Stitches which sort of represent people traveling on the subway. Below the subway are are cabled waves that look a bit like the waves of the Hudson river…which I guess means that we’re looking at the shawl from New Jersey. And no diss to Jersey! Both Springsteen and Bon Jovi are from there, so…mad respect.
Still, one of the most joyful things about a mystery knit is the incredible number of color combinations that are so inspiring. They make the same pattern look entirely different, and let everyone put their own color sense to it. You can learn so much about color play this way!
Take a look at the soft look of Thyme on Ravelry’s shawl:
And Alex’s (aka NativeGardenKnits on Rav) fantastic version pairing warm autumn shades with stunning steel blues:
Meanwhile, KimDenise on Rav did some stash diving and used DK weight to craft a BIG shawl in glowing Bollywood colors:
No hiding in these colors, and I love it!
If you’re looking for some color inspiration, do check out all the wonderful shawls in the project pages on Ravelry—we had such a great time knitting this up and supporting each other, and even though I tend to feel like I’ve crashed after a sugar-high when an mkal winds down, I’m gonna miss this one!
No worries, tho—I’ve got a few new patterns in the works that you’re gonna love, AND am already thinking about next year’s MKAL theme, so stay tuned. I just promise it won’t be Gut Milk, The Musical.
Speaking of next year, if you cruise and have had Iceland and Norwegian fjords on your bucket list, and want lots of knitting fun too, Laura Nelkin and I are teaching on a fantastic 2 week cruise *next* June (2026) with Wild Onion Productions:
You can click here to get on the info list for it if you have any inklings that you’d like to join in (registration isn’t open yet). We’re in for an amazing trip to some fantastic ports:
Whew! That’s all for now—Enjoy whatever is on your needles, and wherever you are on your knitting journey, I’m so glad to have a seat next to you in your inbox today:)
Happy knitting,
Mary (aka Lyrical Knits)
As a former Knitter with a capital "K," my heart wept when I saw the pictures of this shawl! Bravo. I am the proud owner of more than 30 shawls I've knit over the years, so I have sworn off knitting shawls. However, I am coming out of knitting retirement to make this shawl. I can't wait to cast it on. Designing this must have been so much fun! It's really gorgeous, and I'll stop gushing now.
Mary, will you design a 4-colors (or fewer) cowl based on some of these stitches?
